First Ever Aerial Footage of an Uncontacted Amazon Tribe

First Ever Aerial Footage of an Uncontacted Amazon Tribe
By EDW Lynch on February 16, 2011

In January Survival International released the first ever aerial footage of an uncontacted Amazonian tribe. The film (and a series of astonishing aerial photographs) are part of a human rights campaign by Survival and other NGOs to protect uncontacted tribes in Peru and Brazil who are increasingly threatened by encroachment from illegal loggers. Survival’s director Stephen Corry puts the situation in stark terms:

“The illegal loggers will destroy this tribe. It’s vital that the Peruvian government stop them before time runs out. The people in these photos are self-evidently healthy and thriving. What they need from us is their territory protected, so that they can make their own choices about their future.”

Sorcery! A Real-Life M.C. Escher Waterfall

This is a video of a guy who built a functional version of M.C. Escher’s iconic eye-bending waterfall. Don’t ask me how it works, but I suspect it has something to do with a carefully designed optical illusion. That or black magic. I’m leaning towards black magic.

NYC subway is a cluster pluck

Conductor: www.mta.me from Alexander Chen on Vimeo.

Alex Chen created an app that pulled in data from the NYC subway’s schedule and simulated the train traffic in real time. But when each train crossed another on the various lines, he programmed a note to be struck. It sounds cool, but it looks even better.

“Conductor turns the New York subway system into an interactive string instrument. Using the MTA’s actual subway schedule, the piece begins in realtime by spawning trains which departed in the last minute, then continues accelerating through a 24 hour loop. The visuals are based on Massimo Vignelli’s 1972 diagram.”

360 Interactive Heli Video (forgive the song)

A company called northStudio has created a video with Nimmo Bay Helicopter Resort that allows viewers to control the viewing angle of 360-degree panoramic pre-recorded video through a click-and-drag interface. The technology uses six cameras strapped to a custom-built rig attached to a pole that’s attached to the helicopter. Proprietary video merging software then creates the “seamless flying experience.” According to the company, the technology was made possible due to improvements in internet and processor speeds. In the video, the camera is slung below a helicopter as it flies down rivers, skims 10,000-year-old glaciers, hovers over waterfalls, and more, and the viewer controls the viewing direction at all times.
